The Origin Story

It all started with one man who ate dog treats.

They tasted terrible.

Lucas Stone had scoured the pet food aisle. There were baked cheesy things, stinky “meat” strips, green mystery goo, and countless other products that left him unsatisfied with his options. So he started making his own treats inspired by the table scraps his own dog would beg for.

He bought a dehydrator and started experimenting with different whole ingredients. Meat, fruit, vegetables… and the clear winners were steak, pork loin, and chicken breast. He started sharing the treats with his friends and family with overwhelmingly positive feedback.

During the pandemic, Lucas worked for his mother’s mobile veterinary practice, visiting people in their homes to provide quality care for cats and dogs in need. Every day, he would bring a bag of treats to share. Sometimes, dogs were at the end of the road... having not eaten in days. Lucas would surprise everyone in the room as they watched their dog eat from the hand of a stranger. Clearly these treats were something special.

In 2023, Skookum Supply Co. was founded.

A Family Business

Skookum Supply Co. is founded and operated by Lucas and Rachel Stone.

After working so closely with pets and their owners, Lucas noticed room for improvement on every front of the pet product marketplace. He approached his fiancé at the time, Rachel, and together they came up with the look and feel of Skookum’s branding while completing the 75 Hard program. As a self taught illustrator and film school graduate, Rachel took the ideas and ran, creating the designs you see on all Skookum products. 

Lucas is the head of operations and product development while Rachel is the head of branding and marketing (her portfolio here).

As Miss Head Honcho at Skookum, she tells us how products taste and encourages us to increase our production volume while she rolls around in the grass.

She loves a dash of Flavor Booster on her food and turns her nose up at all treats other than Training Rations.

The Story Behind
Our Packaging

Most pet treat packaging features dogs frolicking through meadows, farmers holding grains, and appeal to nature fallacies to distract you from the ingredient list.

At Skookum, we decided to take a different approach. Inspired by the partnership between handler and animal, our Training Rations bags feature hand-drawn iconic American stories. We took some artistic liberties with dogs in space and flight deck pointers, but we wanted to celebrate our pride in the people who accomplish incredible things.

From the wildland firefighters in California, to the aircraft carrier crews across seas, and the brave astronauts in space, thank you for all that you do.

So what does "Skookum" mean?

skook·um /ˈsko͝okəm/ Adj. (of a person or animal) Strong, brave, or impressive and marked by excellent quality.

Skookum is a Chinook Jargon word that has historical use in the Pacific Northwest. Originally used to describe cryptids like Sasquatch/Big Foot, the meaning has evolved to describe anything high quality and strong.

Or as that one guy who passed by our booth at the farmers market said... "It's the opposite of CATTYWAMPUS!"

What ingredients do you use?

The ingredient lists on our products are so small that many people miss it!

  • Steak Training Rations and Flavor Boosters are made of USA sourced beef eye of round.
  • Chicken Training Rations and Flavor Boosters are made of USA sourced chicken breast.
  • Pork Chop Training Rations and Flavor Boosters are made of USA sourced trimmed pork loin and pork tenderloin.

How do preorders work?

We make treats fresh every week in small batches. If a flavor sells out, don’t worry—a new batch is right around the corner. Preorders let you claim yours ahead of time, so your pet never has to wait long.

What is your shipping policy?

We fulfill orders Monday through Saturday, using USPS and UPS. All orders receive $7.99 flat rate shipping. We offer FREE shipping if your order reaches $75 or more.

I have a problem with my order. What do I do?

My package is late and might be lost in the mail... Oh no! Please place an inquiry using our Contact Form.

My order was delivered to the wrong address... First, please double check your order details to ensure that the entered address is correct. If so, contact the carrier to see what they can do to assist you. If you entered the wrong address in your order, you will need to re-order with your correct address.

My order was stolen off my porch... Oh no! Please let us know using our Contact Form and we will send you a replacement... unless we suspect abuse of this very nice policy.

I want to change the items and/or frequency of my auto shipments... Good news! We have a Customer Portal that you can access to adjust your subscription however you'd like! There are no frequency or order value limitations.

I placed an order but want to change the items in that order... If the order has not shipped yet, please place an inquiry using our Contact Form as soon as possible. If the order has already shipped, unfortunately we can't tell the post office to turn around (nobody stops the mail, not even Skookum).
